How to Use Geofencing

Learn how to set up and manage geofences to track vehicle movements, log violations, and receive alerts when vehicles exit defined zones.

Updated this week

Geofencing in Fleetlane helps you monitor when vehicles enter or exit defined geographic zones—ideal for tracking returns, limiting test drive boundaries, or enforcing location policies.

This guide walks you through setting up and managing geofences in your account.

Setting Up Geofencing

  1. Go to Settings > Telematics > Geofencing

You’ll see a list of existing geofences along with their status, trigger type, and actions.

  2. Create a New Geofence

    • Click the NEW GEOFENCE button

    • Define your geofence area using a map interface

    • Set the trigger (e.g. On Exit or On Entry)

    • Choose the actions (e.g. log in vehicle timeline, add violation, send alert)

  3. Enable or Disable Geofences

Toggle the switch next to a geofence’s name to activate or deactivate it.

  4. Edit Existing Geofences

Click the pencil icon next to any geofence to update its configuration.

Alerts and Visibility

  • Violations from geofencing rules will appear in the relevant agreements

  • Vehicle timelines will include geofence entry/exit events for easy tracking

  • Email alerts can be enabled to send an e-mail when an event is triggered

Track Province Departure (Optional)

At the bottom of the Geofencing panel, there’s a Track province departure toggle.

Enable this if you want to automatically log an event when a vehicle leaves its registered province.

Best Practices

  • Create a “Dealer Lot” geofence to track if a vehicle has left or returned to your location

  • Use regional or national geofences (e.g., “Ontario”) for broader tracking policies

  • Regularly review violations for compliance and accountability
